PREMIUM CATARACT SURGERY
The aim of cataract surgery is to improve the patient’s best corrected vision by replacing the cloudy cataract with a clear intraocular lens implant. In contrast, refractive surgery is aimed at treating the patient’s refractive error. Common refractive errors are nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and/or presbyopia.
As technology in the field has continued to advance, we can now combine the two. Premium cataract surgery is aimed at not only improving the best corrected vision, but also aimed at maximizing the patient’s uncorrected vision. Although, it is often marketed under different names, all premium cataract surgeries target the elimination of or reduction in the patient’s need for corrective lenses after surgery including reading glasses. However, not all premium cataract surgeries employ the most up-to-date technologies to reach that goal.
At Lake Travis Eye and Laser Center, we combine the most proven cutting-edge innovations in order to tailor our premium cataract surgeries to the visual goals and lifestyles of each individual patient. Obtaining preoperative digital photos allows us to more accurately align our surgical incisions and lens placements. Laser assisted cataract surgery allows us an increased level of accuracy and precision to maximize the effective lens positioning and centration of the patient’s chosen intraocular lens implant. The reduced energy utilized also allows for a quicker recovery time. Each patient will have an in-depth consultation with their surgeon to determine which premium intraocular lens implant best fits their post-operative visual goals and lifestyle. Taking advantage of the multiple lens technologies, we use individual platforms or blend them to correct for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and even presbyopia. Additionally, we utilize an intraoperative wavefront abberrometer to obtain real-time measurements during the surgery to increase the accuracy of the lens choice and the astigmatism treatment.
